The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is available to outstanding non-EEA/non-EFTA students pursuing a full-time master’s degree at Leiden University.
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme has 3 awards:
- € 10.000 of the tuition fee
- € 15.000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
The LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application
Leiden University Excellence Scholarships Eligibility
Students must have obtained exceptional academic results in their previous schooling, which must be related to the Master’s programme for which they are applying. As an example, the student is in the top 10% of graduates from his or her previous study program. It should be noted that verification of ranking is not required; this information is provided solely to illustrate the level of competitiveness.
Applicants must hold a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport and may be ineligible for study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering) in the Netherlands – with the exception of students applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programmes or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, which have no nationality restrictions.

To be considered for admission to a Master’s programme at Leiden University, you must first apply online. You must explicitly state in your application that you want to apply for the LExS scholarship in the scholarship area and upload your letter of motivation for the LExS award. The deadline for September programs is 1 February (exception: Advanced LLMs: 1 March), while February programs have a deadline of 1 October.
